MJF is 4–7. Should the Intercontinental Champion be worried?

THE CHAMPION’S DILEMMA

MJF carries the Intercontinental Championship into WrestleMania with four wins, seven losses and one no contest. A 36.4% win rate is not the number a champion wants underneath his photograph. It is also not the whole argument.

The number worth separating is his work since taking the title from Joe Hendry. MJF has beaten Kevin Owens at the Royal Rumble and Ricky Saints in Cincinnati with the championship at stake. Those are two successful defences. The champion has delivered when the belt was on the line more reliably than his overall record suggests.

Nashville did not settle the Finn Bálor question. Bron Breakker caused the disqualification, leaving neither man with a win. It would be generous to treat that as proof MJF had Finn beaten, and equally lazy to turn it into another defeat for the champion.

The Triple Threat changes the calculation. MJF can lose the championship without taking the fall. Seven losses suggest opponents have found routes past him; two successful defences suggest he can protect the prize. Both facts matter. Neither makes him safe when Breakker and Bálor can decide the match between themselves.

My tactical concern is isolation. If MJF lets the challengers dictate where the fight happens, he risks becoming a spectator at the only moment that counts. His best answer to 4–7 is not a speech about numbers. It is making sure he is close enough to stop the next pin.
